Sugarbird was rescued in the early 2000s from a home where everyone was so afraid of him. He kept trying to get out of his cage because it was a 24-inch wide cage. He was frustrated, had pent-up energy not being spent, had inexperienced owners, not eating an ideal diet. We took him out of …

Adopt a Parrot
We are so happy that you are considering adopting a parrot rather than buying one! We do have wonderful birds ready for a knowledgeable, loving, and supportive home. Apply to adopt
Before you Apply
We ask that prospective adopters meet the following guidelines before submitting an application:
- Live in a bird-safe home environment without cats, chickens, ducks, ferrets, or dogs that have shown aggression toward or strong predatory drive.
- Be at least 21 years of age at the time of adoption.
- Maintain a completely smoke-free and vape-free environment, including no smoking or vaping by household members or regular visitors, due to harmful residue that can transfer to clothing, hair, and surfaces.
- Have the financial and physical resources necessary to provide lifelong care for a parrot, including veterinary care, enrichment, and appropriate housing.
- Reside within the state of Georgia (at this time).
- Understand that we do not consider applications for parrots intended as gifts or secondary placements for others.
Our Adoption Process
Our adoption process is designed to ensure thoughtful, well-matched placements that support long-term success for both parrots and their caregivers.
- Eligibility
Adopters must reside in Georgia and be 21 years of age or older. - Apply to adopt
Complete the adoption application through Shelterluv. One application per household is required. - Application Review
Our team will review your application and contact you by email to schedule a meet and greet. Response times may be up to 10 days, depending on caseload. - Meet and Greets
You will have the opportunity to meet multiple parrots. It may take several visits (often four or more) to find the right match. We encourage you to remain open, as the best fit may not be the bird you initially expected. - Adoption Foundations Class
Adopters are required to complete our foundations class to prepare for the responsibilities of parrot care. - Home Visit Preparation
Once a match is identified, we will schedule a home visit to help you prepare your environment. This includes guidance on enclosure setup, diet, enrichment, and emergency planning for your specific bird. - Veterinary Coordination
A final veterinary appointment will be arranged to ensure the bird is ready for placement. - Adoption Community Access
Adopters are invited to join our private online FB community for ongoing support and education. - Finalize Adoption
The adoption agreement is signed and any applicable adoption fee is completed. - Share Your Experience
We welcome feedback and encourage adopters to share their experience through Great Nonprofits.
Our Adoption Goals
At Papayago Rescue House, our adoption program is designed to achieve the best possible outcomes for both parrots and their caregivers, with a focus on long-term stability, appropriate placement, and quality of life.
We recognize that parrots are long-lived animals and that “forever” may look different over time. Our goal is to support relationships that are as stable, prepared, and enduring as possible.
Our goals are to:
- Ensure each placement is thoughtfully matched to the individual bird and the caregiver or family
- Consider age and life stage in placement decisions to support long-term stability
- Promote access to appropriate routine and emergency avian veterinary care
- Ensure each parrot’s social, behavioral, and companionship needs are consistently met
- Provide a clean, safe, and appropriate living environment, including proper space and enclosure size
- Encourage caregivers to view parrots as complex, intelligent beings deserving of respect and thoughtful care
- Support environments in which parrots are not subjected to fear, hunger, thirst, or unmanaged pain, and are allowed natural movement and expression of behavior and flight.

Quite the talker Piper is. He has something to say in a very interesting way. He has been in rescue for a while before coming to PRH. We believe in him. That is why he is still in rehabilitation because he really likes people. So we have to get better with training to do better …
A lovely little boy interested in everything! Loves chop and pellets and nuts, chewing wood on his stainless steel serving tray. He has come a long way in behavior and feather condition. He has to be encouraged to play, try new things, and given new problems to solve without stressing him out.
He was bought as a baby with a crop burn. The nice people who bought him rushed him to the vet for emergency surgery. He lost a bit of his crop but you can't tell! He eats well and is an active, healthy boy. He is looking for a friend who understands B&G macaws because …
Poor Devito. He came in with his mate just passed and 4 new hatchlings that were dying due to Malnutrition. He seemed scared and confused. He came in on seed and was struggling. He and the kids are doing well and are separated. He is a very gentle, non aggressive, nervous little one. He just …
Yes, Alice is a male, his original owner didn’t know but he loves his name so we couldn’t change it, thus "Cooper" was added to his name. He is a real character and can be quite the conversationalist, mostly in cockatoo with some English phrases thrown in. You can often hear him say, “shower, shower” or “Alice is …
Some chilis are hot and spicy. Some chilis are mild and warm. That describes Chili. He is a mature bird that is adjusting to life without his mom of 35 years. Fully flighted and enjoys his independence. Cautious and careful but once he is comfortable, he will give you lots of companionship.
Our #1 most surrendered bird is budgies. They are wonderful, playful, fun, inquisitive parrots, but are sadly bought easily as an impulse buy for children from pet stores. They are often bought without a friend due to misguided, outdated information that birds will not bond with you or your child if there is another bird. …
In 2018, we received a call one day that stated "come and get this bird or we are leaving it on the side of the road!" CoCo's parents had been evicted from their home and they were headed out without her. Volunteers tag teamed to go and retrieve her to safety at the rescue in …
