Adopt a Parrot
Adopt a Parrot
We are so happy that you are considering adopting a parrot rather than buying one! We do have wonderful birds ready for a knowledgeable, loving, and supportive home. Apply to adopt
Before you Apply
We ask that prospective adopters meet the following guidelines before submitting an application:
- Live in a bird-safe home environment without cats, chickens, ducks, ferrets, or dogs that have shown aggression toward or strong predatory drive.
- Be at least 21 years of age at the time of adoption.
- Maintain a completely smoke-free and vape-free environment, including no smoking or vaping by household members or regular visitors, due to harmful residue that can transfer to clothing, hair, and surfaces.
- Have the financial and physical resources necessary to provide lifelong care for a parrot, including veterinary care, enrichment, and appropriate housing.
- Reside within the state of Georgia (at this time).
- Understand that we do not consider applications for parrots intended as gifts or secondary placements for others.
Our Adoption Process
Our adoption process is designed to ensure thoughtful, well-matched placements that support long-term success for both parrots and their caregivers.
- Eligibility
Adopters must reside in Georgia and be 21 years of age or older. - Apply to adopt
Complete the adoption application through Shelterluv. One application per household is required. - Application Review
Our team will review your application and contact you by email to schedule a meet and greet. Response times may be up to 10 days, depending on caseload. - Meet and Greets
You will have the opportunity to meet multiple parrots. It may take several visits (often four or more) to find the right match. We encourage you to remain open, as the best fit may not be the bird you initially expected. - Adoption Foundations Class
Adopters are required to complete our foundations class to prepare for the responsibilities of parrot care. - Home Visit Preparation
Once a match is identified, we will schedule a home visit to help you prepare your environment. This includes guidance on enclosure setup, diet, enrichment, and emergency planning for your specific bird. - Veterinary Coordination
A final veterinary appointment will be arranged to ensure the bird is ready for placement. - Adoption Community Access
Adopters are invited to join our private online FB community for ongoing support and education. - Finalize Adoption
The adoption agreement is signed and any applicable adoption fee is completed. - Share Your Experience
We welcome feedback and encourage adopters to share their experience through Great Nonprofits.
Our Adoption Goals
At Papayago Rescue House, our adoption program is designed to achieve the best possible outcomes for both parrots and their caregivers, with a focus on long-term stability, appropriate placement, and quality of life.
We recognize that parrots are long-lived animals and that “forever” may look different over time. Our goal is to support relationships that are as stable, prepared, and enduring as possible.
Our goals are to:
- Ensure each placement is thoughtfully matched to the individual bird and the caregiver or family
- Consider age and life stage in placement decisions to support long-term stability
- Promote access to appropriate routine and emergency avian veterinary care
- Ensure each parrot’s social, behavioral, and companionship needs are consistently met
- Provide a clean, safe, and appropriate living environment, including proper space and enclosure size
- Encourage caregivers to view parrots as complex, intelligent beings deserving of respect and thoughtful care
- Support environments in which parrots are not subjected to fear, hunger, thirst, or unmanaged pain, and are allowed natural movement and expression of behavior and flight.

Help our heart patients
We need your help to purchase heart medications for 7 birds in various stages of heart disease. They are not able to have heart surgery so the medication will help them live a longer, happier life with less pain.
