Baxter is an approximately 25-year-old African Grey whose life has been shaped by love and significant transitions. His elderly mom adopted him from his original owner in 2009, and he remained with her until 2018, when she entered hospice care. A family friend then provided temporary placement, but when that caregiver’s elderly mother needed to move in, Baxter once again lost his home.
Due to limited species-appropriate knowledge in previous homes, Baxter was maintained on a seed diet that included peanuts, which may contribute to long-term nutritional concerns in African Greys. Since entering our care, he has undergone comprehensive disease testing, full veterinary evaluation, bloodwork, and imaging to establish a clear medical baseline.
He has been started on Isoxsuprine (20 mg/mL, 0.2 mL once daily) and Pentoxifylline (50 mg/mL, 0.12 mL once daily) to support circulatory and inflammatory health, along with a 10-day course of Doxycycline (50 mg/mL, 0.2 mL twice daily). He is also transitioning to a more balanced, formulated diet with fresh components appropriate for psittacine health.
At approximately 25 years old, Baxter is in his mature adult years, but African Greys commonly live several more decades with proper medical oversight, nutrition, enrichment, and environmental stability. He will require a knowledgeable home committed to advanced Grey years, consistent veterinary partnership, and the patience necessary to help him regain long-term security and trust.
