Birds

Pebble

He was bought as a baby with a crop burn. The nice people who bought him rushed him to the vet for emergency surgery. He lost a bit of his crop but you can’t tell! He eats well and is an active, healthy boy. He is looking for a friend who understands B&G macaws because he does the bluff, blush, and beak play. He is still quite young but he has feathering issues due to hormonal upregulation that should return as he adjusts to the deslorelin implant. He will make a great companion and friend.

Devito

Poor Devito. He came in with his mate just passed and 4 new hatchlings that were dying due to Malnutrition. He seemed scared and confused. He came in on seed and was struggling. He and the kids are doing well and are separated. He is a very gentle, non aggressive, nervous little one. He just wants a friend and a home where they realize they need to pull eggs, not provide nesting materials, and let them be birds.

Alice Cooper

Yes, Alice is a male, his original owner didn’t know but he loves his name so we couldn’t change it, thus “Cooper” was added to his name. He is a real character and can be quite the conversationalist, mostly in cockatoo with some English phrases thrown in.  You can often hear him say, “shower, shower” or “Alice is a pretty bird”, “Alice is a good bird”, “I love you”, “and then”, and much more.  He loves to make up his own songs and gives new meaning to “singing in the shower”. Although not animated in the shower, he loves to share a shower from his perch with his person. Alice is fully flighted but prefers to walk/run around on the floor.  He is like a little puppy following you around. Alice is mostly self-entertaining but also loves interaction with his people. Like most M2s, he prefers his way and can give a nip if pushed to do something...

Chili

Some chilis are hot and spicy. Some chilis are mild and warm. That describes Chili. He is a mature bird that is adjusting to life without his mom of 35 years. Fully flighted and enjoys his independence. Cautious and careful but once he is comfortable, he will give you lots of companionship.

Parakeet Paradise

Our #1 most surrendered bird are budgies. They are wonderful, playful, fun, inquisitive parrots but are sadly bought easily as an impulse buy for children from pet stores. They are often bought without a friend due to misguided, outdated information that birds will not bond with you or your child if there is another bird. The reality is that budgies need another bird due to how social they are. That is why they love being in a flock as our first sanctuary bird here at PRH. They eat well, bathe, play, preen, fly at will, flock, and receive medical treatment in an indoor enclosure that is all their own. They still need someone to love them, just from afar. They do have an Amazon Wishlist if you would like to send them a new ladder, perch swing, and/or toy.

CoCo Chanel

In 2018, we received a call one day that stated “come and get this bird or we are leaving it on the side of the road!” CoCo’s parents had been evicted from their home and they were headed out without her. Volunteers tag teamed to go and retrieve her to safety at the rescue in a picnic basket that she couldn’t stand up in. Which wouldn’t have helped her anyway as she was unable to stand up straight due to her feet. They had been broken awhile ago. The previous owner did state she came from an abusive home where they broke her feet so she wouldn’t keep getting down off her perch. We don’t know her age but we do know that she is a young female. Radiographs show evidence of great vessel mineralization; DJD at multiple joint spaces; fracture of ventral aspect of proximal phalanx, major digit on...

Abby

What a lovely little girl. She is a big fan of men and being a companion to one. She is currently suffering with hormonal challenges that she receives deslorelin implants for. She may also have ABV. We can’t do proventricular: keel score ratios in Eclectus because their GI tract is more dilated than other birds but her GI tract looks very dilated (rather than rely on tests that more often read negative). Radiographs show changes consistent with probable cardiovascular disease/atheroslerosis. Her great vessels are prominent and dilated and it appears she may have some vessel mineralization. She is also on VetOmega to help her with the proper fatty acids. She is only 11 years old. Abby is on medical watch now and needs support like every birdie else.

Albert

Albert is a social mate bonded U2. Albert has been with us for several years. He has mate bonded with the CEO and is very close to her. Albert also suffers from PDD or what is now referred to as ABV (Avian Borna Virus). He is front and center to keep a close eye on his weight, changes in eating, drinking, sleeping. He is under a vet’s care and oversight to ensure managed care. With close management, this disease is managed currently. His quality of life is extremely high so we keep him within the rescue, with his friendships with the volunteers and staff, and keep a vigilant watch. If you would like to send him a toy, see his Amazon Wishlist to keep his days and beak busy!

Dali

Dali is such a great guy! He is interested, engaged, wants to learn, wants to see new things, he is still learning how to do new things without becoming too stressed. Great temperament, attitude, and playful nature.
