We have welcomed two sweet, vibrant green-cheeked conures into our rescue family. These two-year-old siblings were surrendered after their family discovered they had avian bornavirus (ABV)—a condition they were born with, passed from their mother to her eggs.

PDD/ABG/AG is caused by an inflammatory response of the nervous system which leads to problems in the gastrointestinal tract, peripheral and central nervous systems, and heart. While ABV infection has been shown to be a factor in the development of PDD/AG, many birds infected with ABV live long, healthy lives with no evidence of disease. Instead, it is possible that ABV infection needs to be paired with some other (currently unknown) factor to cause disease.

ABV doesn’t define these loving birds. After spending months with us, these conures have proven just that—they’re thriving, playful, and full of life. They’ve stolen our hearts with their silly antics, joyful talk, and mischievous natures. Make no mistake, they are true to behavior GCCs.

What You Need to Know:

  • They are healthy and show no symptoms of the disease. They go together so they will always have each other.
  • Keep an eye out for the development of any clinical symptoms (we will provide you key things to look for) and seek an avian (or avian-experienced but not a primarily mammal vet) vet’s attention as soon as you notice them. Inform your veterinarian that your birds has tested positive for ABV in the past when discussing any new symptoms.
  • We recommend these two be the only parrots in residence but these two are plenty of parrot sass!
  • These conures deserve a home that will celebrate their fun personalities and offer them the love, care, training, and excellent diet they need and deserve.

Their journey hasn’t been easy, but their resilience inspires us every day to learn more about ABV and how to help parrots and their families keep them healthy. If you’re ready to open your heart and home to these incredible birds, please reach out. Their adoption fee has been waived for them.  You will have the support of our community so that together, we can give them the bright future they deserve.
